Secretary's Report
December 2014
Minutes of Executive Board meeting November 18, 2014
1. Health Fair Outreach - Jerry, Leslie, Joe and Frank staffed a NARFE information table. Some free memberships were given away: Jerry (3) and Leslie (1). (They used their own money.) Overall, they felt that the outreach went well. There was some discussion about whether the Chapter should pay for these free memberships. However, the cost to the Chapter would be substantial, particularly when we are losing money because of the loss of memberships, and the cost of the newsletter. We may have to switch to a bi-monthly edition, or possibly use email newsletters for those who would prefer this.
2. Program - The Program Committee held a meeting at Juanita's house on October 24 and finalized plans for the coming year (2015). Leslie distributed copies of the outlined program as follows:
- Helen has arranged for a speaker from Mercy Housing in January.
- Jane will finalize the February program soon. (NASA speaker)
- Jerry will arrange for the March luncheon at the Hard Knox cafe.
- Juanita has firmed up plans for a speaker from the FBI in April.
- Helen is arranging a visit to the Columbarium in May.
- Helen is arranging a visit to the Potomac (FDR's restored Coast Guard cutter) at Jack London Square in June.
- Jane is awaiting a reply from Ann Lindsay about whether she will speak again in July.
- Jon will arrange to present a program on Legislative issues in August.
- Jerry will arrange for a luncheon in September - perhaps a Mexican restaurant.
- Jerry will try to get at least three health care providers to speak in October.
- Juanita will arrange for speaker(s) from federal unions in November.
- We will have our usual holiday luncheon in December - which Jerry will arrange.
3. Jackie Spear event - Jerry attended this, and although Rep. Spear did not speak (or attend), however, Jerry felt that, by attending, we help to hold our representatives accountable.
4. Other Chapter Holiday luncheons - Many luncheons are being held in December: Monterey, San Jose, San Mateo, Daly City, Tri-Cities, and Marin. Jerry will email info on all of these luncheons, and Dianne will put this info on the Chapter website.
5. Nomination Committee report - Frank and Jerry comprised the nominating committee, and call all current officers to see if any wished to run for any of the offices. No one wanted to run for any other office, although Jerry would like to relinquish the office of president if anyone was willing to serve. No one volunteered to run. But all officers agreed to continue in their positions. Juanita agreed to continue as 2nd VP in charge of "macro strategic focus. Operational, finite issues would continue as the focus of the Membership committee." In the event that Jerry isn't available to chair an executive board meeting, the 1st VP would preside. Also, if he isn't available, the Program Committee member who had arranged for the speaker could chair that meeting. Leslie will continue as Public Relations chair. Frank will head the Alzheimer's committee. Martha will continue as Social media outreach Rep. and Dianne will continue as Treasurer and Webmaster. Joe will continue as Newsletter Editor. Jon will continue as Legislation Chair.
6. Retirement Seminar presentation - Gail Casteneda, of the Federal Executive Board, invited Chapter 65 to give a NARFE presentation at the FEB Retirement sessions on January 27 and 28 at 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 am. (90 7th St., Room B020). Jerry and Juanita will do this; if anyone else can help, please let Jerry and Juanita know. Gail's number is 415 625-2461, and her email is castaneda.gail@dol.gov. Also see www.sffed.us. Jerry reminded us that many NARFE materials are stored in the Wage/Hour office on the 13th floor (Room 13-100). Check with the receptionist (Chris). He has a key although you won't need it, as emergency equipment is also stored there, and must be available. (The tablecloth is also in there. Jerry has ordered all the NARFE materials)
7. Next Federation meeting - Further information to be provided.
8. Raffle Updates and other reports.
Frank has received a total of $91 since the last report, and he gave Jane the letter from the Alzheimer's Assn. providing a breakdown of these contributions.
Dianne reported that she has received approximately $800 for fundraiser so far.
Dianne reported that we have $1,260 in the NARFE 65 account. The official treasurer's report will be posted on the chapter website.
Meeting adjourned about 12:00 noon.
Respectfully Submitted,
Jane Ramos, Secretary
