SAN FRANCISCO, CA

Secretary's Report

January 2012

Minutes of Chapter 65 Executive Board meeting of January 18, 2012

Present at the Board Meeting were: Jerry, Leslie, Herman, Dianne, Martha, Frank, DorisMarie and Jane
President Jerry passed out the agenda for the meeting.

1. Convention materials and website discussion, fees for delegates, time frames for submissions of interest, and the selection of delegates process, etc. Members can go on line to register for the convention in Reno-Sparks, Nevada from August 26-30, 2012. There is also a form in the January NARFE magazine and much information on the convention. Chapter 65 will be able to send 15 "delegates" - a figure based on membership numbers of the Chapter. We will need to decide by the February meeting who is going. People who have worked on Chapter business will be the preferred delegates or committee members. There is a $65 registration fee which will be paid by the Chapter. Other expenses are borne by the attendee, but some of the expenses may be covered by the approx. $1000 which has been set aside for delegates to share (not to exceed actual expenses). See the January magazine for further details on the convention itself. Contact Jerry if you want to go. Banquet tickets can be bought later. If you want to be on a committee, let Jerry know!! We need to know by the February meeting who the delegates will be.

2. There was a discussion of various reports available to officers on the National website. Need your membership number, ID and password. Chapter officers can see many reports on the NARFE website. Jerry printed out multiple reports of lists that we (officers) can access re: membership. For example: Membership lists (daily updated); Every new member since a specific date; Members who have dropped, etc. Members are encouraged to give national NARFE their email addresses so that they can receive timely updates.

DorisMarie will be the NARFE-PAC coordinator.

3. Discussion on dues distribution and structure: Jerry pointed out that this is a somewhat complicated issue. It's complicated to explain to potential members, so we try to make it as simple as possible. There is a membership application in the magazine each month which notes that the first year membership is $45 and includes national and chapter dues. It varies a bit after that, and multiple year payments reduce the actual yearly membership. Dues withholding reduces it even further.

4. Discussion on Membership, national plan, recruitment tips, retention tips
This is a very important subject because we have been losing members nationwide.  Reasons are many, but we need to work on this, because numbers give strength. Herman had previously written a membership plan which we need to review again. Martha asked for a copy so that it can be put on the Chapter website. National NARFE's plan is on the website, and we should all review this.

5. 2012 Program revisited. Discussion. The "final" plan was distributed.

6. Committee reports: DorisMarie reported on all the calls she made this month, including emails. She made a total of 58 contacts. Frank reported that he received a letter from the Alzheimer's Association thanking us for the $12 and $40 contributions (coffee money and contributions received at the December luncheon).
Dianne reported that $5,990+ is in the Chapter account. Martha said that she's attending a web marketing class and will apply principles to our Chapter website. She'd like to get a group together for brainstorming to discuss this. Let her know if you're interested!

At the General Meeting at 1 pm, our speaker was Lennie Lund, District V Vice President of the California State Federation of Chapters.
She gave us an excellent overview of the CFSC structure and responsibilities. She recommended that we get "Voice of the Federation" on the CSFC narfe.org website. An excellent publication by Ray Harrington. Ellen Rafferty in Palm Springs is the the CSFC legislation liaison, who can provide help to us for our conversation with James Molinari, of Senator Diane Feinstein's office. Mike Causey, a columnist, also has valuable information on federal employment, etc.

Julie Tagan, National NARFE Legislative Director, will be in Sacramento on January 29 for the California Postal employees. This might be worthwhile attending.
February 15 will be National call in day. Check the NARFE website for information.
Information on the District V meeting will be forthcoming.

Respectfully submitted,

Jane Ramos
Secretary, Chapter 65
